Finding a job

Teaching English

This industry is booming here in Buenos Aires as English is becoming something that everyone needs to know, especially for business. There are plenty of institutes looking for native english speakers to teach classes in companies or private students wanting to prepare for exams, and even for children.

To become qualified to do this you will have to take a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) or a CELTA (Certificate in English Language Training for Adults) course. There are many places in the city which offer these courses, and they both allow you to teach English anywhere in the world upon completion. The format is usually 4 weeks, 120 hours including practice lessons, and I must warn you it is quite intense, I mean you will not have much time to do anything else during the week as you have to be at the institute between 10am and 5pm or 6pm.

Once you have this certificate you are ready to apply and go on some interviews and, ultimately, start earning some cash! The institute you do your teaching course through will undoubtedly help you find a job, or at least provide you with details of some local schools and institutes. Finding a job shouldn't be too tricky because there are so many language institutes around, and they all have a lot of student demand. Regarding pay rates, intitutes vary between paying AR$55 - AR$65 per hour, as a rule don't accept less than this, and if they offer more, all the better! If you advertise yourself, or meet someone who wants to learn English privately with you then you can charge around AR$80-90 per hour.

You can expect to teach around 20 hours per week if the institute(s) you work for have a lot of courses, and 30 hours per week if you can and want to. Bare in mind that not all of the courses you teach will be at the same place, so you will have to travel around the city to get to your classes, which can sometimes be tiring. However, if you work between 20 and 30 hours a week you can earn enough money to live within your means.
